As of January 1st 2005 there is an identification requirement (identificatieplicht) in the Netherlands. Everyone in the Netherlands (14 years and older) must be able to present a valid identification document upon request of the police or any other supervision holders. As a result, everyone (14 years and older) must always carry a valid identification document. If you cannot present a valid ID, you can be taken to the police station and/or given a fine. Your passport, Dutch driver’s license, and Dutch ID-card are all valid identification documents.
It is advisable to purchase a Dutch ID-card when you register at the municipality.
