S4 students benefit from a private collective student healthcare insurance policy. The policy you obtain at VPZ prohibits you to work; this includes partime jobs or paid internships. If you are a trainee and you only get paid a basic traineeship allowance (onkostenvergoeding or stagevergoeding) you will be treated as a student and will therefore not be required to change your healthcare insurance.

If you start working (pay income tax) you will have to make other arrangements, specifically by taking out a public healthcare insurance, also called “basisverzekering”. The difference in cost between this basis verzekering and the private collective student insurance premium must be paid by you directly to NNAM. Both the student and S4 will receive information on the mutations made in the insurance policy, including the new insurance premium. Please note that everyone who has a Dutch public healthcare insurance policy (basisverzekering) is eligible to receive healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag). This is a monthly payment from the government to help you with the cost of your healthcare premiums (for more information about zorgtoeslag go to www.toeslagen.nl).

Students who are younger than 18 years are not eligible to receive healthcare allowance. Students who are not working and insured under our private collective healthcare insurance policy are not allowed to apply for this healthcare allowance 'zorgtoeslag'. If they do so they will receive a fine form the Dutch Government.

The premium (2012) for a 'basisverzekering' starts from € 100,96 per month.

Once you have decided on the package you prefer, S4 or NAMM will inform you of the exact amount of which you will have to contribute monthly. S4 or NAMM will also send you an authorization form in order to deduct the monthly fee from your bank account.
