Students under DUO (18 years and older) may apply for an ‘OV-student subscription’. With this ‘OV-student subscription’ you can travel free of charge or discounted by the public transportation.

HBO/WO students can start using their ‘OV-student subscription’ on September 1st because they are entitled to study financing as of this date. It is advisable to buy a 1-month public transportation subscription (OV-maandabonnement) for the first month in Holland. This subscription costs between € 75,-/ € 100,- depending on how far or in which you are travelling.

To be able to travel for free you will have to order an OV-chip card at www.ov-chipkaart.nl and follow the procedures stated. Your OV-chip card will be sent by mail to your given address. After receiving your OV-chip card you can load your OV-student subscription up at specific points throughout Holland. These points are called “ophaalautomaat” and you can find the nearest at your current location by checking on www.ov-chipkaart.nl/adresvinder. The activation of your OV-student subscription will be on the commencing date of your DUO study financing.

MBO students older than 18 years can start using their OV-student subscription on August 1st because they are entitled to study financing as of this date.

Students can choose between a week and a weekend OV-card.

With the Week-cards you can travel:

  • free of charge on Monday 04.00 to Saturday 04.00 (except on holiday and from July 16th 04.00 to August 16th 04.00)
  • free of charge on Good Friday
  • 40% discount on Saturdays 04.00 to Monday 04.00
  • 40% discount on holidays from 04.00 to 04.00 the next day and from July 16th 04.00 to August 16th 04.00

With the Weekend-cards you can travel:

  • free of charge on Friday 12.00 to Monday 04.00
  • free of charge on holidays from 04.00 to 04.00 the next day
  • 40% discount on Monday from 0.400 and on other week days from 09.00 to 04.00 the next day (on Friday until 12.00)

What to do in case your Chip card gets lost or stolen

Call the Klantenservice (Customer service) OV-chipkaart: 0900 - 09 80 (€ 0,10 p/m) as soon as possible. They will block your stolen OV-Chip card at once. The customer service agent will inform further matters to be taken so you may get a new OV-Chip card as soon as possible.
