Our Approach

Student Support Services St. Maarten is committed to making a difference in the lives of our students by supporting each student in the program, retaining them in college or university, and giving them the tools and assistance necessary to earn their degrees. Through coaching and advising, academic peer mentoring, and financial aid, S4 aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for all their students.

Things we believe

Special

Special

According to the manual ‘Guidance and care Antillean students in college and university’ of Expertise diversity policy (1998), ‘Antillean’ students may be considered as a specific group in higher education.

Fairness

Fairness

All students should be able to have a fair chance to higher education, independent of language barrier, level of study or background.

Development

Development

Deciding to move to the Netherlands to study is proof that students are eager to learn and develop themselves.

Dropout?

Dropout?

Deciding to move somewhere else (back home) to continue your study is not the same as being a ‘dropout’.

Tailored

Tailored

Better study results are recorded and failure can be prevented when both the guidance in the Netherlands and on the islands is better tailored to the personal and situational factors.

Analytics

Analytics

The basis for a successful academic career is associated with intrinsic motivation and a “winners mentality” among the students themselves .

Identity

Identity

We believe that students should embrace their identity and who they are, because this makes them stronger and stand out among others.

Self-reliance

Self-reliance

Central premise of the Student Counselling New Style is caring for, help to foster, and/or cementing the power of autonomy of students in relation to their academic career and life in the Netherlands (social functioning)
